Shot Bro: Confessions of a Depressed Bullet is inspired by true events. In 2009, Rob Mokaraka, a highly acclaimed actor and playwright, had undiagnosed depression and unresolved trauma that resulted in him being shot by police in an attempted suicide.
Shot Bro is the testimony of Rob’s seven-year journey of healing and self-discovery. Shot Bro is a powerful, raw, authentic one-man presentation/seminar that exposes, shares, and illuminates the effects of depression, anxiety and suicidal ideation. Using a tikanga Māori framework to safely hold space, he utilises Māori humour, heart and truth from his lived experience.
Rob skilfully navigates communities through his experiences with depression and addresses intergenerational trauma, while allowing communities to find a breath to laugh, and ponder the deep moments during the journey he takes you on.
The wānanga/forum afterwards is the most healing and revealing part of the entire experience and leaves people with a weight lifted off them as they safely share and process their emotions under the korowai of the kaupapa, which opens the possibility to embrace healing modalities.
At the core of Rob’s personal journey is aroha/compassion, which can help others and alleviate the stigma attached to mental health and fills them with hope, realising they are not alone. They see that on the other side of fear is aroha and compassion.
